Government Spending Insights in Alberta

This project analyzes the distribution of government grant payments in Alberta during the 2023–2024 fiscal year. The dataset includes detailed records of recipients, funding programs, amounts, and funding sources such as the Lottery Fund. The goal is to identify which ministries allocated the most resources, who the key beneficiaries were, and which program types received the most support. The analysis offers insights into government priorities and spending transparency by examining actual disbursements, not accrual-based expenditures.

Data was cleaned and standardized using Python for complex statistical analysis, while Power BI was used for initial processing. The cleaned data was then visualized for deeper insights.

Results

Analysis of grant payments in Alberta during FY2023-2024 reveals a clear prioritization of the Health and Education sectors, which together received over 70% of total funding, with the majority going to the Ministry of Health (58%). A peak in transfers was observed during November, probably due to fiscal closures. Less well-funded areas, such as Public Safety and Justice, suggest opportunities for a more balanced allocation. Major recipients were Alberta Health Services, universities and municipalities such as Calgary. It is recommended to explore trends over time, assess funding effectiveness, and analyze geographic and demographic equity.
